Prehnite

It was the first mineral named after a person — Colonel Hendrik von Prehn (18th century) — and is sometimes referred to as the “grape jade” of collectors due to its rounded formations.

General Information

Prehnite is a translucent calcium aluminum silicate celebrated for its luminous green color and organic crystal growth. Moroccan specimens are especially prized for their saturated apple-green tones and sculptural botryoidal formations.

Moroccan prehnite forms within cavities of basaltic volcanic rock during low-grade metamorphic and hydrothermal activity. It is frequently found in association with epidote, creating a striking contrast between soft green translucence and sharply defined dark crystals.

Prehnite is found in volcanic environments around the world, but Moroccan material is especially known for its rich color and dramatic epidote pairings.
