General Information

Tiger iron is a striking natural stone made up of layered tiger’s eye, hematite, and red jasper. Its bold bands of metallic silver, deep red, gold, and brown were formed through ancient geological processes that compressed and transformed iron-rich sediments over immense spans of time. When cut and polished, tiger iron can reveal dramatic chatoyance—the shimmering, cat’s-eye effect associated with tiger’s eye—alongside the rich contrast of jasper and hematite. Each piece is naturally unique, making tiger iron especially popular for display specimens, cabochons, jewelry, and polished slabs.


The rock is essentially a piece of Earth’s early atmospheric history.

Much of the well-known Australian tiger iron comes from ancient banded iron formations (BIFs) in Western Australia. Those iron-rich sediments were deposited on ancient seafloors roughly 2.4–2.7 billion years ago, although some tiger-iron-bearing formations can be even older. The Australian Museum describes similar Pilbara BIF material as about 2.5 billion years old.

The connection to the atmosphere comes from the iron bands. Early Earth’s oceans contained enormous amounts of dissolved iron because there was very little free oxygen available to oxidize it. As photosynthetic microorganisms began producing oxygen, that oxygen reacted with dissolved iron, converting it into insoluble iron oxides that settled onto the seafloor. Repeated changes in ocean chemistry produced the alternating iron-rich and silica-rich layers characteristic of BIFs.


Locality — Pilbara, Western Australia
Tiger iron is most famously associated with the ancient iron formations of Western Australia’s Pilbara region. Here, more than two billion years of geological history are exposed across a rugged landscape rich in banded iron formation. Localities such as the Ord Ranges and the Marra Mamba region are renowned for material combining deep red jasper, metallic hematite and shimmering golden tiger eye. Folding, faulting and later mineral alteration transformed these ancient layers into the striking patterns seen in polished tiger iron today.


Australian Cinema link 

he AACTA statuette has a 22-karat gold figure based around the Southern Cross, and its base is made from Australian tiger iron. AACTA specifically chose tiger iron because it is distinctly Australian and reflects the colors of the Australian outback. Each base is individually cut from the stone, so no two trophies are exactly alike.


The current statuette design dates from the launch of AACTA in 2011–2012. It was designed by Western Australian sculptor Ron Gomboc, with stone artist Richard Williamson cutting and polishing the tiger-iron bases.


This stones story

I met a group of Australian lapidary workers who had been coring massive slabs of Tiger Iron—some easily eight inches thick and weighing hundreds of pounds—to create the bases for AACTA award trophies.

I purchased the piece you see here as a large leftover section from that work. The rounded edges along the slab are the scars left by the cores removed to make the trophy bases. Somewhere in Australia, other pieces from this same stone now form the bases of AACTA trophies.

I took the remaining material, cut it into thinner slabs, softened and cleaned up the harsh edges left by the coring process, and polished the surface to bring out the remarkable banding, metallic hematite, red jasper, and golden tiger’s-eye chatoyancy you see today.

In modern crystal-healing traditions, Tiger Iron is associated with strength, grounding, courage, vitality, and determination. Because it combines Tiger’s Eye, Hematite, and Red Jasper, practitioners often describe it as a stone that promotes confidence, focus, endurance, and emotional stability. These beliefs are cultural and spiritual traditions and are not supported by scientific evidence.
